Like Bingo and Lotto, Keno is a game of luck and chance. There aren’t a lot of skills and strategies that people can use to improve their odds of winning at Keno. This is because the numbers that the computer chooses for Keno are selected by a Random Number Generator (RNG). And, since the RNG operates independently for each Keno round, it doesn’t work to use information from previous Keno games to plan for future games. There is no Keno strategy that will help a player improve his odds from game to game similar to how card counting can help a Blackjack player improve his odds from hand to hand.

But, there are a few things that players can do to make the game more enjoyable—and which some people do claim to help increase their winnings. While these aren’t guaranteed to help, they certainly can’t hurt.

Play Keno at casinos that offer the best payouts.

Keno generally offers the lowest payouts of any game at the casino. But, payouts are really rather large considering that players don’t have to put much money into the games. Check to see what, exactly, the payouts are before playing Keno at any particular casino or online website. Online Keno websites should have a payout schedule published or listed somewhere on their website.

Play the right quantity of numbers on your Keno card.

This matters more than some people think it does. Most Keno games allow players to select between 1 and 15 numbers on a card. It is generally recommended that players opt for choosing between 4 and 8 numbers. This is for two reasons. First of all, this amount of numbers removes the extreme of too few numbers being chosen. If only a few numbers are chosen, yes, a player may match every number with the computer; however, the payout may be so minimal as to discourage the player from continuing to play. The second reason is pretty much the opposite—it removes the extreme of too many numbers being chosen. Choosing many numbers means that, yes, some numbers will likely be matched with the computer; however, unless all or nearly all of the numbers are matched (which is highly unlikely), the payout is, again, very minimal.
So, selecting between 4 and 8 numbers any time you play Keno is optimal.

Probabilities of attaining selected Keno numbers

1 75.0 25.0
2 56.0 38.0 6.0
3 41.6 43.1 13.9 1.4

5 22.7 40.6 27.0 8.4 1.2 0.1
6 16.7 36.3 30.8 13.0 2.9 0.3 <0.1
7 12.1 31.5 32.7 17.5 5.2 0.9 0.1 0.1
8 8.8 26.6 32.8 21.5 8.2 1.8 0.2 <0.1 0.1
9 6.4 22.1 31.6 24.6 11.4 3.3 0.6 <0.1 0.1 0.1
10 4.6 18.0 29.5 26.7 14.7 5.1 1.1 0.2 <0.1 0.1 0.1
11 3.3 14.4 26.8 27.8 17.8 7.4 2.0 0.4 <0.1 0.1 0.1 0.1
12 2.3 11.4 23.8 28.0 20.6 9.9 3.2 0.7 0.1 0.1 0.1 0.1
13 1.6 8.9 20.7 27.3 22.7 12.6 4.8 1.2 0.2 <0.1 0.1 0.1
14 1.1 6.8 17.6 25.9 24.2 15.2 6.6 2.0 0.4 <0.1 0.1 0.1
15 1.1 6.8 17.6 25.9 24.2 15.2 6.6 2.0 0.4 <0.1 0.1 0.1

Choose the correct numbers.
Due to the RNG, each game of Keno stands alone and is not influenced or affected by previous game results. However, many people do believe that following one of these two strategies can help because they follow the laws of probabilities:

Playing unseen numbers: Some players believe that this is the best strategy, thinking that if certain numbers have not been seen at all yet over the course of quite a lot of Keno games, then these numbers are definitely due to come up soon. These players choose numbers that the computer has not selected—or, possibly, numbers that other players have not chosen.

Playing already chosen numbers: Players who like this strategy believe in the idea of trends and patterns in Keno. They watch the numbers that are coming up and then select numbers that have come up frequently, thinking that these are the winning streak numbers.

Keno CardsKeno is one of the easiest casino games to learn. It is uncomplicated, and somewhat similar to playing Bingo or Lotto. There are a few different varieties, but those are not tricky or difficult to understand.

Objective
The objective of Keno is to guess which numbers the random number generator machine will choose. The more numbers a player guesses correctly, the higher the payout is for the player.

Game Play
The player selects between 1 and 15 numbers. Numbers must fall between 1 and 80, as those are the only numbers that could possibly be chosen by the machine. When the player selects a number, that number will turn a different color than the other numbers on the board to designate that the number is a chosen one. If players do not want to manually select their numbers, they can choose to have numbers randomly selected for them. Players can opt to deselect a number if they would like—as long as they do so before their turn has finished. The player also makes a bet. The screen will show the potential payout as more numbers are chosen—this will aid the player in deciding how many numbers to select and how much to bet.

Next, the computer randomly selects 20 numbers. After the computer has finished, the numbers are compared. The player scores a ‘hit’ for ever number of his that matches one of the computer’s numbers. The more ‘hits’ a player has, the higher his payout will be; however, his payout will also depend upon how much he has bet. A maximum bet will obviously bring a larger payout than a minimum bet.

Online Keno games are much faster-paced than games in land-based casinos. This is partly because players can opt to play a series of four or five games at a time.

Types of Keno Cards
Although most Keno games work just as described above, and most Keno cards are of the same type, many online game websites have been developing different types of Keno cards in order to give players different experiences with Keno. Online casinos have been trying special varieties of Keno cards in order to allow players to have better odds of winning and to keep players interested in the game.

Way Ticket: These tickets allow players to choose many sets when playing; therefore, they end up costing less money to play than regular tickets.

Split Ticket: Using this type of ticket is like playing two games on one ticket. Players can draw a line down the center of the ticket and then select numbers on each side of the line. This ticket does, however, offer a lower payout than a standard ticket.

20 Spot Ticket: Players using these tickets can choose up to 20 numbers. There are up to 18 unique ways of winning. The downside to these tickets is that the payout is less because matches of only 4 to 6 numbers will not usually pay.

Progressive Jackpot Keno
This type of Keno is more difficult to win; however, it has a really large jackpot. The top payout is not a fixed amount of money; rather, it builds as people play the game because money is added to the jackpot each time a person makes a bet. The jackpot starts at $50,000 and keeps growing until someone wins.

To win this jackpot, a player chooses 10 numbers. Then the computer selects 10 numbers. All 10 numbers must match in order for the player to win the entire jackpot.

In some casinos (online or offline) smaller amounts of the progressive jackpot are awarded to players who match a smaller amount of numbers.

picture of dragonWhile often compared to Bingo, the game of Keno has very different origins. Unlike Bingo, which originated in Italy in the 1500’s, Keno dates back to the Han Dynasty in China. This means that Keno has been played since about 200 B.C., far longer than Bingo.

Keno spread through Ancient China because ruler Cheung Leung needed to finance a war. He was aware of a mathematical game called “The White Pigeon Game” (due to the fact that white pigeons were used to deliver results from city to city). Leung began using this game to produce revenue for his war and it quickly became popular throughout China.

Some historians maintain that Leung called his game “Kino,” others state that he kept the name “The White Pigeon Game.” Regardless, his usage of this game resulted in the widespread popularity of the game. Funding from the game was also said to have been used to build the Great Wall of China.

When the game was first played, Keno tickets had 120 Chinese characters. Players would select 10 characters using an ink brush. This procedure led to the term “keno spots” that is used today.

In the 19th century, Chinese immigrants migrated to America to help build the trans-continental railroad. At this time, they brought the game of Keno with them—but, the game was called the “Chinese Lottery” among Americans at this time. As the game gained popularity, the name changed to “horse race keno” as a way of getting around the strict gambling laws in America at the time.

Eventually, the Chinese characters on the Keno tickets were changed to numbers and the number of characters was reduced from 120 to 80. This is the version of Keno that is played today, and it is quite popular around the world.
