slot machinesMany people enjoy playing slot machines because they do not involve a great deal of skill and knowledge like some other casino games. Instead, slot machines involve luck and chance.
Each pull of the lever (or push of the button, since nowadays most machines have push-button technology) offers players a new opportunity to win. Every spin is separate from the last—odds are not figured cumulatively. All spins on the same slot machine give players the exact same payout odds.

Because of this, there aren’t many methods to really help players improve their chances at winning on slot machines. But, here are some tips that can help a person to more effectively manage his money—which can end up leading to more happiness in the game.

Check for slot machines with the largest payouts.

Read the machine carefully. There are actually several different types of slot machines with varying payout structures. Be sure you understand how the machine works before putting any money into it. Here are the basic types of machines:

Multiplier Slots: These slot machines pay out for a specific symbol. The number of coins a
player used multiplies the payout amount. Players can opt to use only one coin if they want, so these machines are ideal for players who prefer to play with a minimum amount of coins at a time.

Bonus Multiplier Slots: These machines are just like standard multiplier slots; however, they pay out bonuses if players have hit a jackpot when using the maximum number of coins. Players may or may not think that the bonus amount offered is worth spending the extra coins for each play of the slot machine.

Multiple Pay Line Slots: Slot machines of this type offer more than one line for payout, meaning that players can win on more than one line of the slot machine. Depending upon the machine, there can be between three and nine possible lines on which players can win. Players using these slot machines must use additional coins to activate each line for a possible win—all lines are not automatically open for possible winning opportunities.

Buy-Pay Slots: These slot machines should only be played if players are willing to invest the maximum number of coins. This is because each coin used opens an additional payout option, and the maximum number of coins is necessary to open up all payout options, including the biggest jackpot.

Progressive Slots: These machines should also only be played with the maximum number of coins. This is because progressive slot machines take a percentage of each game and add it to a progressively growing jackpot. Anything below a win of the progressive jackpot will pay less.

Set a machine loss limit
Before you begin playing, decide how much money you will allow yourself to lose at a particular slot machine before moving away from that slot machine. This amount of money can be whatever you are comfortable with—just stick to it. If you lose that amount at one slot machine, move on to another machine.

Set your betting strategy
Decide ahead of time what your betting strategy will be. Set limits for yourself for what you will do if you are winning and what you will do if you are losing.
For example, you could decide that if you have won a certain amount of money, you could increase from playing dime slots to playing quarter slots. Similarly, you could opt to switch from playing dime slots to playing nickel slots if you have lost a certain amount of money.
Make sure that you understand, however, that betting more will not increase your chances of winning. It will only possibly increase the size of the jackpot you could win.

Set your budget
Play on a machine that matches your budget so that you can play for an amount of time that you find enjoyable. For instance, if your money is limited, you may not want to play quarter slots because you may not be able to play for very long.

After you have played through your budget, cash out any winnings. This way, you will (hopefully) finish the playing session with cash in your wallet.

Play for fun

If, at any point, you are not having fun—stop playing. Slot machines are supposed to be fun. If you are not enjoying yourself, this is not the right activity for you.

Because slot machines are so popular in the casinos, and because so many people play them every day, many myths about the machines have sprung up over the years. Here are some common misconceptions about slot machines—and why they are untrue.

1.) You left a slot machine, and then someone else immediately won a jackpot on that very same slot machine. If you had stayed and played on that slot machine a little longer, you would have won that jackpot!

This belief is very common—many people kick themselves for leaving a particular machine when another person wins a jackpot on that machine soon afterwards.
It is unlikely that you would have won the jackpot if you had stayed at that particular machine. Slot machines operate through computer programs that use a Random Number Generator. This means that with each lever pull or button push, the player has an equal chance to win the jackpot.

2.) Counting the symbols on each reel can tell you the odds of winning.

The number of symbols on the reels has nothing to do with the odds of winning. The odds are determined by the computer program of the slot machine.

3.) Casino managers can control the slot machines with a flip of a switch.

Casinos cannot loosen or tighten the payback percentage or change the payout odds of any slot machine by flipping any switch—no such switch exists.

Slot machines contain a computer chip—one that is preset at the factory—that determines the machine’s odds. These chips are expensive and not very easy to change. Changing the chips often requires paperwork submission to the Casino Control Commission. This is the only way that slot machine odds can be changed—and, since it is expensive, difficult, and time-consuming, casinos very rarely do this.

4.) Slot machines that have not had recent payouts are due to have a payout soon.

This is not true. Since slot machines use the Random Number Generator, each lever pull or button push represents a brand new chance for a payout. So, slot machines that have not had recent payouts may or may not have payouts soon—there is no way to tell.

5.) Coin temperature affects how a slot machine plays.

Slot machines are simply that—machines. They do not feel temperature. It does not matter at all if you use coins that are cold, warm, or hot.

6.) Using a slot club card causes slot machines to pay out less.

Again, since the Random Number Generator determines payouts, this is untrue. Using your slot club card has nothing to do with payouts.
And, using your slot club card can actually give you advantages to you—it can give you extra perks from the casino—so go ahead and use it.

Walk into any casino, and the first sounds you hear are those of the slot machines. Most casinos have dozens of them—and for good reason. Slot machines generate about 70% of the average casino’s income! They are the most popular of any type of gambling in casinos.
These machines are used all over the world. In the United Kingdom, they are referred to as ‘fruit machines,’ possibly because many of the machines use pictures of fruit in the slots. Down in Australia, people call them ‘poker machines,’ perhaps because a great number of devices are made with images of playing cards and because many are video poker machines.
Slot machines pay players based on a variety of different symbols or images. Usually coin-operated, these machines can have anywhere from three to five (or sometimes more) reels that spin when the player pulls a lever or pushes a button on the side of the machine. In order for the slot machine to pay the player, the symbols or images must match or come up on a specific reel or in a certain pattern, as indicated by the particular slot machine.

Slot Machine History
In 1891, Sittman and Pitt in Brooklyn, New York developed a gambling machine. While not exactly a slot machine, their gambling machine was certainly a precursor to the modern-day slot machine.
Their machine was based upon poker. It had five drums that held the fifty card faces. A player would spin the drums by pulling a lever (after inserting a nickel), and if he ended up with a good hand he would win. This machine did not automatically disperse winnings as today’s machines do, though. Instead, players winning on this machine would receive a prize from the place that had the gambling machine—a free beer, perhaps, or maybe a cigar.

This machine led many other people to develop slot-type machines. One that was a particular inspiration to some modern-day machines was a machine that was designed to give out fruit-flavored gum to winners. This machine used images of various fruits for its reels, which are commonly used today in many modern machines. Also, the customary ‘bar’ symbol that is used today on many machines came from this machine and its logo from the Bell Fruit Gum Company.
In 1964, Bally invented the first slot machine that was completely electro-mechanical. Named the “Money Honey,” this machine was the first to have a bottomless hopper and automatic payment ability. This slot machine could pay out up to 500 coins.

Today, there are many types of slot machines. There are machines with different payout lines, ones with unusual themes or tokenization abilities (such as the ability to purchase more credits at the slot machine with a single token). There are video poker slot machines, and machines that allow players to use different denominations of currency. New types of machines are being developed all of the time.

Slot Machine Technology
Unlike older models of slot machines, today’s slot machines are entirely computerized. Computer programs are used to generate the odds of winning and to determine the reel positions—and, they are completely unpredictable.

Computer programs for slot machines use a Random Number Generator (RNG). This is a system that goes into effect the moment a person pulls the lever or pushes the button on the slot machine. The RNG works at an incredibly fast speed to determine a number, which either does or doesn’t match up with one of the winning results. Each pull of the lever or push of the button represents a brand new chance to match up when using the RNG because the computer program treats each game play as a new experience. In other words, playing over and over does not increase the odds of winning.

Some programs do use Pseudo-RNG programs, meaning that they will repeat themselves at some point; however, it is generally impossible to know when that repetition will occur.
The odds of winning today’s slot machines are based upon how the computer programs are set—the programmers can determine how they want the odds of winning to be.
